Overview
Costa Rica is the world's poster child for nature travel: a quarter of the country is protected, and you will see sloths, monkeys, toucans, frogs and turtles almost everywhere. This classic route starts in Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast, a village reachable only by boat, with canals full of wildlife. Next is the Arenal volcano with its hot springs and hanging bridges, then the misty cloud forest of Monteverde. You finish at Manuel Antonio, where rainforest meets white-sand Pacific beaches. There's a nonstop flight from Zurich with Edelweiss, and door-to-door shared shuttles (Interbus and others) link every stop, so a car is never needed.

Getting there
Edelweiss flies nonstop from Zurich to San José (SJO) year-round, about 11h30–12h. It also flies seasonally to Liberia (LIR) in Guanacaste. From Geneva, connect in Zurich by train or flight, or fly one-stop via Madrid (Iberia), Paris (Air France) or Frankfurt (Lufthansa/Condor).

Getting around
Book shared shuttles online a few days ahead (or ask your hotel). They pick you up at your lodge and drop you at the next one. For Tortuguero, book a 2-day package including the shuttle, boat, lodge, meals and tours. The jeep-boat-jeep transfer across Lake Arenal is the scenic shortcut to Monteverde. Short Sansa flights save hours if you're short on time.
Shared door-to-door shuttles (Interbus, Caribe Shuttle, EasyRide) are the backbone: comfortable, reliable, USD 50–85 per leg.
Tortuguero packages and most activities include hotel pick-up.
Boats are the only access to Tortuguero; the jeep-boat-jeep crossing of Lake Arenal.
Sansa and Green Airways link San José with Tortuguero, La Fortuna, Quepos and the Osa peninsula (20–40 min).
Public buses are very cheap (CHF 3–10) but slow, with changes; fine for flexible travellers.
Uber works in the San José area; taxis elsewhere.
