Overview

Why Iceland?

Iceland is a raw, elemental landscape of glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, geothermal lagoons, puffins and whales, with the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter. It's only 3h50 from Geneva. Most visitors rent a car to drive the Ring Road, and outside the Reykjavík area public buses are infrequent and don't stop at the sights. This itinerary works without driving by basing you in Reykjavík for excellent day tours (the Golden Circle, the Snæfellsnes peninsula), a 2–3-day small-group tour along the south coast to the glacier lagoon, and a 45-minute domestic flight to Akureyri for the north (Lake Mývatn, whale watching in Húsavík). It's one of the most expensive destinations in the world, and it's less flexible than self-drive, but it's very doable.

Flights from Geneva

Since September 2026, Icelandair flies nonstop from Geneva to Reykjavík-Keflavík (KEF), 3 times a week, about 3h50. Icelandair also flies from Zurich. Reykjavík's domestic airport (RKV) connects to Akureyri in 45 minutes.

Getting around

Transport without a car

Stay in central Reykjavík, where tour companies pick you up at numbered bus stops. Reykjavík itself is walkable, with city buses (Strætó). To and from the airport, take the Flybus or Airport Direct, both of which can stop at the Blue Lagoon. For the north, fly from Reykjavík's city airport to Akureyri, then join local tours. Always check the weather (vedur.is) and road conditions (umferdin.is): tours are cancelled in storms.
