Overview

Why Mexico?

The Yucatán Peninsula packs a lot into a small, flat area. You get great Maya cities (Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Tulum), pastel colonial towns (Valladolid, Mérida, Izamal), and thousands of cenotes (natural swimming holes in the limestone). The coast adds Caribbean beaches, the laid-back island of Holbox and the freshwater lagoon of Bacalar. It's excellent without a car: ADO's comfortable first-class buses connect every town, the new Tren Maya adds a scenic alternative, and cenotes and ruins are reachable by colectivo (shared minivan), bicycle or a short taxi. The route also partly avoids the seaweed problem (sargassum) that affects Caribbean beaches in summer, because Holbox, the cenotes and Bacalar lagoon are not affected.

Getting there

Flights from Geneva

Fly into Cancún (CUN), the gateway to the whole peninsula. From Geneva, there are one-stop connections via Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt or Amsterdam (about 13–15 h in total). Edelweiss flies nonstop from Zurich (about 11h30, several times a week), which is 2h45 by train from Geneva.

Getting around

Transport without a car

The Yucatán is one of the easiest places in Latin America to travel without a car. ADO first-class buses are air-conditioned and punctual, with reserved seats, toilets and luggage storage, and they link every town on this route. Book in the ADO app. The Tren Maya is a comfortable new alternative, but it has only a few trains a day and some stations are 15–30 min outside town. Colectivos (shared minivans) cover the short hops to cenotes and ruins. For the few places without public transport, a taxi for half a day or a small-group tour costs little when shared.

Cancún airport / Puerto Morelos

Arrival and departure point. For the first night, skip the hotel zone and stay in Puerto Morelos, a relaxed fishing village with a reef, 20 minutes south of the airport.

Where: Puerto Morelos (quiet, 20 min from the airport) or downtown Cancún near the ADO terminal.

Isla Holbox

Car-free sandbar island with sandy streets and golf carts, calm shallow water, flamingos, and bioluminescent plankton at night. It's on the Gulf side, so there's little sargassum.

Charming colonial town with pastel streets and a cenote in the middle of town. It's the best base for Chichén Itzá (45 min away) and Ek Balam.

The elegant 'White City' and cultural capital of the Yucatán. It has colonial mansions, free music and dance in its plazas every night, and the best food in the region.

Tulum

Maya ruins on a cliff above the Caribbean, surrounded by some of the most beautiful cenotes. It's trendy and expensive, but the setting is superb.

Where: Tulum town (cheaper, walkable, bikes to the beach) or the Hotel Zone along the beach (pricey).

Bacalar

Relaxed lakeside town on a 40 km freshwater lagoon that shades from turquoise to deep blue. It has no sargassum, and the water is calm and warm.

Where: On the lagoon shore just south of town, so you can swim from your hotel's dock.

Good to know

🛂 Visa (Swiss passport)
Swiss passport: no visa needed for tourist stays (up to 180 days, at the officer's discretion). Your passport must be valid for the whole stay. Immigration may ask to see your return ticket and first hotel booking.
📝 Entry formalities
Your entry is recorded digitally at Cancún airport (keep the stamp or QR slip). Quintana Roo also charges a mandatory tourist tax called Visitax (≈ MXN 290, about CHF 13 per person). Pay it only at the official site, visitax.gob.mx, before you leave.
💉 Health
No mandatory vaccines. Recommended: hepatitis A and typhoid. Dengue is present, so use repellent. Many cenotes require a shower first and allow only biodegradable sunscreen (or none). Don't drink tap water.
🛡️ Safety
Tourist areas are generally safe, but stay alert. Use ADO buses and official taxis, don't carry valuables at night, and never buy drugs (the main link to the cartel violence reported in Tulum and Cancún nightlife). Check the Swiss FDFA travel advice before you go.
💱 Money
Mexican peso (MXN), roughly 22 MXN per CHF. Cards are widely accepted in towns, but carry cash for colectivos, cenotes, markets and Holbox. At ATMs and card machines, always choose to be charged in pesos.
🗣️ Language
Spanish. English is common in Cancún, Tulum and Holbox, less so in Valladolid and Mérida; a few words of Spanish help a lot.
🕒 Time zone
Quintana Roo (Cancún, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) is UTC−5 all year. Yucatán state (Valladolid, Mérida) is UTC−6. That makes it 6–7 h behind Geneva. Check train and bus times when crossing between the two!
🔌 Plugs
127 V, US-style plugs (types A/B). Bring an adapter; phone and laptop chargers work fine.
📶 Phone & apps
Buy a Telcel eSIM or SIM (about CHF 10–20 for 2 weeks of data). Install the ADO, Uber and DiDi apps.
