Overview
Why Norway?
Norway is the easiest destination on this list to do without a car. Trains, fjord boats and small planes are designed to work together, and the famous routes (the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway, the Nærøyfjord) are best seen from a train seat or a ship's deck anyway. The trip starts with the fjords around Flåm and Bergen, then flies north of the Arctic Circle to the Lofoten Islands: granite peaks straight out of the sea, white beaches, and fishermen's cabins where you can sleep. It's only 2h40 from Geneva with no jet lag. The catch is the price: Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world. The summer weather is also changeable, so bring a rain jacket even in July.
