Overview
Oman is the Arabian Peninsula at its most authentic and welcoming. There are no skyscrapers here; instead you find mud-brick forts, date-palm oases, and villages clinging to canyon walls. Swimming holes hide in turquoise wadis, golden dunes stretch across the Wahiba Sands, and turtles come ashore to lay eggs at night. It's only 7 hours away, with a small time difference, and the weather from November to March is perfect. The one catch for a car-free trip is that Oman is built for self-drive. Buses link only a few towns, and the mountain roads need a 4×4. The solution is a driver-guide for the whole trip. It isn't cheap, but it makes the trip effortless, especially when split between 3 or 4 friends.

Go between November and March. It's one of the best winter-sun destinations close to Europe.

Fly to Muscat (MCT) with one stop via Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, about 8–10 h in total. Edelweiss's seasonal Zurich–Salalah–Muscat flights have been cancelled for winter 2026/27.

Getting around
Book a driver-guide with a 4×4 through a local agency for the whole trip, including airport pick-up. Your driver waits at each stop, explains the history and handles the mountain roads. In Muscat, taxis and the OTaxi and Marhaba apps work well (there's no Uber). Desert camps can collect you from the main road in Al Wasil or Bidiyah if you arrive by bus.
The only practical car-free way to see the interior; comfortable and flexible. Book early for winter.
Mwasalat coaches are modern and cheap, but very infrequent (2 a day on main routes) and don't reach the sights.
Taxis and apps (OTaxi, Marhaba) work in Muscat; agree the price for longer trips.
Day tours from Muscat (Wadi Shab, Nizwa, Daymaniyat) and multi-day group tours are widely available.
