Overview
Puerto Rico mixes Spanish colonial heritage, Caribbean energy and American convenience. Old San Juan's blue cobblestones, pastel houses and huge forts sit on the ocean, and nightlife in Santurce runs to reggaeton and salsa. The El Yunque rainforest is 45 minutes away. By ferry or small plane, you reach Culebra, home of Flamenco beach and turtles, and Vieques, where a kayak at night in Mosquito Bay turns the water electric blue. San Juan and the two islands work well without a car (walking, Uber, ferries, tours and golf carts), but the rest of the main island is car territory.

Getting there
Fly via Madrid: Iberia flies nonstop from Madrid to San Juan (SJU), up to 14 times a week in winter. From Geneva that's about 12–14 h in total. Alternatively, connect through a US hub (New York, Miami), but you'll pass US immigration there. Puerto Rico is a US territory: you need an ESTA.

Getting around
Stay in Old San Juan or Condado and use your feet and Uber. Take tours to El Yunque. For the islands, take an Uber to the Ceiba ferry terminal (about 1 h) or fly from San Juan in a small plane. On Culebra and Vieques, use the 'públicos' (shared vans), taxis or a golf cart (a golf cart is driving a vehicle, so skip it if you want no driving at all).
Uber is reliable and affordable in the San Juan metro area.
Old San Juan is perfect on foot (steep in places), and there's a free trolley.
Ceiba → Culebra / Vieques: very cheap but hard to book; arrive early.
Small planes to the islands: pricier but easy and scenic.
Well-organised tours with pick-up for El Yunque, the bio bays and snorkelling.
Island taxis and públicos meet the ferries.
San Juan buses and the Tren Urbano are limited, with no service on Sundays.
