South Africa combines one of the world's most beautiful cities with world-class safaris. There's almost no jet lag, and there are nonstop flights from Zurich. Cape Town sits between Table Mountain and two oceans, with penguin beaches, dramatic coastal roads and the Winelands an hour away. Hermanus is one of the best places on Earth to watch whales from the shore (June–November). Then a short flight takes you to a private game reserve next to Kruger National Park, where rangers in open vehicles find the Big Five twice a day. Getting there
Flights from Geneva
It's easy from Switzerland. Edelweiss flies nonstop from Zurich to Cape Town (CPT) from September to May (≈ 11h20, overnight), and Swiss flies nonstop from Zurich to Johannesburg (JNB) daily (≈ 11 h). Book an open jaw: into Cape Town, and home from Johannesburg after the safari. From Geneva, connect in Zurich by train or flight, or fly one-stop via Frankfurt, Doha or Dubai.
💡 Domestic flights (Cape Town → Kruger area, Kruger → Johannesburg) on Airlink cost CHF 150–300 each; book with your international ticket if possible.

No mandatory vaccines. There's malaria risk in the Kruger area (low to moderate, higher Oct–May): ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis. Cape Town is malaria-free. Tap water is safe in cities. Excellent private hospitals.

Crime is a real issue. Use Uber, don't walk alone after dark, don't flash phones or cameras, and keep bags closed. Visit townships only with a reputable guided tour. On hikes, go in groups and stick to popular trails. Safari lodges and wine estates are very safe.

South African rand (ZAR), roughly 21 ZAR per CHF. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; tip 10–15% in restaurants, and tip rangers and trackers at lodges.
