Overview
Sri Lanka fits an incredible variety into an island smaller than Switzerland and Austria combined. There are ancient cities and cave temples in the Cultural Triangle, and misty tea plantations in the hills. You can see leopards and elephants on safari, blue whales off the coast (December–April), and end on relaxed beaches and colonial Galle. It's also one of the easiest countries to visit without driving: almost every visitor hires a car with a driver-guide for the whole trip (about CHF 60–90 a day), and the famous hill-country train is the highlight of the journey. People are warm, English is widely spoken, and the food (rice and curry, hoppers, kottu) is a highlight.

Go from mid-December to early April. For a summer trip, swap the south coast for the east coast (Trincomalee/Arugam Bay).

In winter, the easiest option is Edelweiss's nonstop flight from Zurich to Colombo (CMB): three flights a week from 26 October 2026 to May 2027, about 10h30. Otherwise, fly from Geneva with one stop via Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul (13–15 h in total).

Getting around
Hire a car and driver for the whole trip (arranged with a local agency or through recommended freelance drivers), and use the train for the most scenic stretch. The driver drives your luggage around and meets you at the arrival station. In towns, use tuk-tuks with the PickMe or Uber apps for fair prices. Note: the Kandy – Nanu Oya section of the hill-country railway was damaged by Cyclone Ditwah (Nov 2025) and is expected to reopen around early 2027. Nanu Oya – Ella, the prettiest part, is running again.
The standard way to travel: comfortable, flexible and affordable when shared. Choose a driver with good reviews.
The hill-country line through tea plantations is one of the world's great train rides. It's slow, and seats sell out: book reserved 2nd-class or observation-car seats 30 days ahead.
Everywhere for short hops; use the PickMe or Uber apps or agree the price first.
PickMe and Uber (cars and tuk-tuks) work in Colombo, Kandy, Galle and the south.
Safaris are always by open jeep with a local driver, booked through your hotel or driver.
Very cheap and they go everywhere, but they're crowded, hot and driven aggressively. Only for short hops.
